Dubuque Area Writers Guild
Who are we?
The Dubuque Area Writers Guild began as a group of writers who wanted to share their work with other writers and lovers of the written word. Currently, we meet on the second and fourth Friday of every month at 6pm in Monk’s Kaffee Pub (located at 371 Bluff Street in downtown Dubuque). The Writers Guild also publishes an annual anthology of creative writing and art by local writers, the release of which coincides with a public reading at DubuqueFest each May. For more information, send us an email at dubuqueareawritersguild@gmail.com or find us on Facebook!
2018 is the 40th anniversary
This year is the 40th anniversary of the DAWG anthology and we are completing our compilation in collaboration with another great organization, the Dubuque Facing Project. The Dubuque Facing Project is a non-profit organization that “connects people through stories to strengthen communities. Their model guides communities as they enlist a team of writers to be paired one-on-one with citizens who are facing life circumstances that deserve to be shared to better educate the broader community. The pairs meet, get to know each other and share stories of triumph and tragedy, of loneliness and community, of hate and happiness, of deep depression and lofty goals.”
The Dubuque Facing Project is focused on Facing Diversity and this year we are helping to support the creation of an anthology centered on the stories of Dubuque’s LBTQIA+ community. We will launch this book as the kick off to DubuqueFest and have a reception at the Dubuque Museum of Art, May 18th from 6-8 pm where we will have selected submissions from the Facing Diversity compilation share their stories. Food and refreshments will be served. This event is free to the public. Books will be available at the reception and are free to the public.
